I took my first trip to Africa in October 2024, visiting Zanzibar and Tanzania. I chose Nyamisi to be my tour guide because of her love for East Africa. She often talks about her family’s connection to the motherland, and I wanted to experience it firsthand. Nyamisi’s tour was filled with familial touchpoints, historical gems and local knowledge. Although my ancestors were from West Africa, I still saw myself connected with the region’s complicated legacy. Nyamisi welcomed me into her homeland with warmth, making my entire trip into a memorable experience.

My favorite part was finally coming to Africa for the first time. I had been excited about this journey for a long time, and being there exceeded my expectations. I especially loved the balance of comfort and cultural immersion, from the beautiful hotel accommodations to exploring the city, visiting local markets, and experiencing everyday life alongside the people there. It felt meaningful to see and connect with the community in such a personal way.

It’s hard to choose a favorite moment because we experienced so much, met so many people, and shared incredible meals throughout the journey. What stayed with me most was meeting people who have such a deep love for where they come from and for sharing the history, culture, and natural beauty of Tanzania. During the safari drives, I learned how connected everything is, from the trees to the giraffes, impalas, and warthogs, and how each part of the environment relates to the other. Experiencing that in real time, while learning from people with such deep knowledge and lived connection to the land, was incredibly meaningful. I feel very lucky to have experienced this place in such a thoughtful and personal way.
